South Africa Community Support

Childhood Now (formally Friends of Noah Canada) is partnering directly with three communities: Christianenburg, Sithokozise, Siyawela/Zamimpilo. These three communities independently and faithfully care for hundreds of orphans on a daily basis by providing: nutrition, early childhood education, home visits, and enrichment education around technology and arts,

These communities are evident of the success of Childhood Now in training communities to run their own community based organizations (CBOs). We are proud to partner with these communities as they continue to care for so many deserving children.

Big Little Caravan of Joy

The Big Little Caravan of Joy’s arts program is designed to empower vulnerable children in Africa through the natural language of play and the creative arts.

Designed in partnership with local artists and educators, our program combines creative and fun filled activities in dance, drama, visual arts and music which empower, engage and encourage resilience, confidence and joy for each and every child involved. The Big Little Caravan of Joy implements sustainable arts based programs for children led by local artists, educators and community volunteers through the year in schools and daycares. The arts curriculum developed specifically for children also develops, supports and encourages the capacity for cognitive, physical and emotional development.

The Big Little of Joy’s Teacher Education Program (The Empowered African Child Conference) has trained over 1,000 international artists and educators with a child-centric arts-based methodology in the hope that the arts become a sustainable cornerstone for educational programs in these communities of need. The arts syllabus includes a pedagogical curriculum designed for childcare workers and educators that teaches, trains and models new ways of developing and implementing positive and successful programming in schools or daycares.

Our program has been implemented in Ghana, Burkina Faso, South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda, Kenya and Zimbabwe.

Athletes in Motion (AIM)

New to our program offerings this year is AIM Sports Camp. This is a partnership between Childhood Now, Athletes in Motion (AIM), Sportscorps, and eThekwini Municipality.

AIM visited all three of our Childhood Now communities in South Africa, engaging the children in an 8 day sports and leadership camp. Campers and leaders participated in four sports per day among swimming, Cross Fit, skipping, hockey, rugby, martial arts, ultimate frisbee, soccer, and volleyball.

In total, campers each received 20 hours of formal sport instruction, plus a final fun filled day at the beach. Leaders of the camp received 18 hours of formal training pre-camp, and 20 hours of informal training during camp.

This sports camp is leading to a sustainable after school sports program at our three centres, operating year-round.

We look forward to implementing another camp at the end of 2016, as well as having plans for a Canadian-based sports camp implementation.
